Stewardship of the physical environment

Stewardship of the natural resources is an integral part of a sustainable community. Kittitian Hill will seek to mitigate the impact of the development on the physical environment through a number of initiatives including;

Renewable Energy; Kittitian Hill is committed to developing enough renewable energy to have the entire resort supplied on a phased basis. We have initiated and continue to support the formal development of the island’s geothermal capacity.

Golf Course; an extensive natural resource management plan has been developed. It will, among much else, use treated wastewater from the resort to irrigate the golf course, involve extensive edible landscaping and aim to become the third organic golf course in the world.

Transport; a pool of electric cars will be available, allowing members of the resort to travel around the island without polluting it, whilst electric golf carts will be used within the resort. Both cars and carts will be charged from renewable sources.

Building Design; all buildings are designed and being built using best environmental practices amongst which; maximizing the use of local materials, use of wood from sustainable sources, elimination of incandescent bulbs, chlorine-free pools, water saving faucets/showers, insulated roofing materials and energy efficient appliances.

Edible Landscapes; the grounds will be planted with organically grown food-producing trees, shrubs and vegetables, transforming the traditionally non-productive resort landscape into a food producing and bio-diverse garden. Indigenous plants will also be planted to enhance wildlife habitat and decrease the need for irrigation. A collection of rare and heirloom tropical fruit trees will be maintained as a botanical collection, in order to safeguard endangered species and cultivars, protecting our biodiversity. Selected planting material will be distributed to interested farmers and collectors both domestically and regionally.

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle; a number of initiatives will be introduced including; resort composting, reusable shopping bags, local bottled spring water in reusable glass bottles and recycling of all paper and cloth into handmade paper.
