The national currency of St. Kitts & Nevis is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD). The currency is managed by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, which is headquartered in St. Kitts, and is used in most of the English speaking Caribbean islands. The XCD is pegged to the United States Dollar and has remained at the same rate of exchange (XCD 2.68 to USD 1.00) since 1976.

For hundreds of years, St. Kitts & Nevis operated as a sugar mono-crop economy but, due to the commodity’s decreasing profitability, the government closed the industry in 2005. Tourism, agriculture, light manufacturing and financial services are today the main economic drivers of the island’s economy.
